Mission

Science Mentors 1 to 1 is an organization that develops competency and self-esteem in under-represented high school students through the application of the scientific method to environmental issues.

WHY ScienceMentors 1 to 1 MattersIn 2011, an intense focus is being placed on America’s need forinnovation to produce jobs, and the imperative to better educate ourchildren to foster future innovation. Notably, environmental innovationis among the top priorities.
While scientific innovation and education top our national agenda, the most recent nationwide science test results show that only aboutone-fifth of high school seniors score at or above proficiency level.*Moreover, despite several decades of federally supported programs, minorities continue to be underrepresented in the scientific workforce. The staff, mentors, students and volunteers of ScienceMentors 1 to1 are transforming this model, one student scientist at a time. Theprogram supports student mentees at Trenton Central High School,a largely underserved student population. The volunteer Mentorsare selected from a cross-section of scientists, business executives, educators and public servants who dedicate their time and resourcesto improving the performance and potential of their student mentees.
